I discovered a new place to get fresh produce. St. Louis Produce. This is NOT a sponsored post, they did not give me any of this for free nor did they pay me. I purchased this out of pocket because I liked the concept.
I was looking online for a place to buy fresh produce, and stumbled upon this company. I had never ordered from them before and did so without blinking. To be really honest, I was actually looking for a farmer’s market that was close to home, and discovered I could have it delivered and I kind of liked that idea.
This is a St. Louis based produce company that’s been around since 1900 when founder Tony Catanzaro came to America from Italy and his fruit business was a horse and cart! Love that!
I’m a St. Louis girl, so I feel like I was aware of them, just didn’t realize they delivered.
If you are in the St. Charles/St. Louis Metro area… you’re sure to be able to get a box delivered! Their prices are reasonable, and the boxes are packed full. It looks like you may be able to have boxes of fresh produce shipped to you our of area as well, though I am not sure. I didn’t really look into that, obviously.
The way it works, is that you choose a box. Fruit, Vegetable, Mixed, Salad, Soup and Stew, Smoothie or Holiday.
Each box is $30.00. I ordered one fruit box and one vegetable box.
Here’s what I got.
In the vegetable box I was supposed to get:
- 1 lb. Broccoli
- 2 lb. Baby Carrots
- 1 head Cauliflower
- 1 stalk Celery
- 2ea. Cucumber
- 2ea. green pepper
- 2ea. red pepper
- 2lb. Zucchini Squash
- 7lb. Baker Potatoes
- 2 head Romaine Lettuce
- 2 lb. Tomatoes
- 2 ea. Jumbo Yellow Onions
- 2 bu. Green Onions
I was missing the cauliflower which ironically was a needed item for a recipe I was making that very night it was delivered lol so we just ran to the store and grabbed one, but they replaced it with two more red peppers and two more green peppers.
Note: There is somewhere on the site I did read that they could swap items out.
In the fruit box I was supposed to get:
- 6 ea. Fuji Apples
- 6 ea. Golden Delicious Apples
- 8 ea. Large Oranges
- 2 ea. grapefruit
- 8 ea. kiwi
- 1 3lb. bag Halos
- 2 .5 pt Raspberry
- 2 qts. strawberries
- 6 ea. green Pears
- 6 ea Lemons
- 6 ea Limes
I did not get the two grapefruit, the 1 3lb bag of Halo’s or the 2 .5 pint of raspberries. (three items I REALLY wanted)
I recieved as a replacement – a bushel of 5 bananas, 1 lb bag of grapes and 3 red pears. The only reason I was bothered by this is that I didn’t feel the items swapped equally, but in addition, I had a huge bushel of bananas sitting on my counter already. I like bananas but I had not planned to have so many at once.
I was actually a bit disappointed not to receive the Cauliflower, the grapefruit, the Halo’s and the Raspberries. All of these things were on my grocery list when I ordered, so I was excited to get them. I do appreciate that they subsitute items but I don’t like that it isn’t reliable that those items will be available the NEXT day.
I love the Farmer’s Market’s in my area, but sometimes I can’t get to them, and this is a decent alternative. I ordered the night before by 11pm and they delivered the next day! I really liked that. They were prompt with delivery and very very nice when they delivered the boxes. However they did not disclose that these items were missing or replaced, so I wasn’t aware until we opened the boxes.
Overall I would give them a 3 stars out of 5 stars. I would give them four, but with the missing items and the fact that several items looked like they wouldn’t last past another day or two, the longevity of the items is in question. I might update this at a later date if I decide to order from them again.
I still think for the value it’s a decent buy. They were prompt and courteous and I appreciated that. It was easy to buy and the site is easy to navigate and I loved the variety of boxes.
Day 3 Update: Today we had to throw out so much of the stuff that was delivered. All of the oranges had molded on the bottom, three of the pears had entire sides that were rotted. Many of the vegetables had wilted. I don’t know how I feel. If I go to the farmer’s market, I can usually get about 5-6 days to use the items I purchased – plus they are locally grown and usually fresh as can be. In this case, I feel like I hadn’t even gotten 3 days on a fair majority of it. I don’t think I would do it this way again, unless I could ensure that the produce was fresher. When we pulled many things out, you could see clearly they weren’t going to last long and we tried to use that stuff up first. So I’ve dropped my star rating to 2 stars out of 5 stars because I cannot afford to spend that kind of money and not have the produce last longer than 3 days. I’m a food blogger and while I can cook a lot of recipes in one day, that’s not typical and I can’t rely on the items inside the box to be the ones I actually thought I was getting.
