I am sure by now you have heard about the news story regarding Judy Mays/Judy Buranich, but in case you haven’t – here is the one link to the single “small town” news station that carried the story. WNEP. A quick summary of the story – Judy Buranich is a tenth grade teacher at a high school in Pennsylvania. Judy Mays is an Erotic Romance Author.
They are one in the same.
Ms. Buranich uses a pseudonym/pen-name so it isn’t easy to track her down. There are a handful of parents (seriously when the news story showed the group, I think there were 5 of them there and one of them is the daughter of one of the people), that are challenging her ability to teach students and write erotic romance novels.
In fact, one lady identified in the news report as Kelly Hornberger, says –
“I cannot even believe that someone would write such stuff.” And then goes on to further say, “I don’t want my son sitting in her class thinking is she looking at him, you know, a certain way.”
Are you freakin’ kidding me? WTF?
So now romance authors and erotica writers are thinking about kids “a certain way” when they go about their daily lives? Wow… Is it just a narrow minded attitude or is this woman seriously an idiot? Does she seriously worry that Judy is doing this? * shaking head *
And then there’s Deanna Stepp who has “done a lot of research”,
and says, “there are other parents that know about this and some are afraid to speak out, uhm, in my case, I’m not afraid to speak out because we need to think about what’s best for the children in school now.”
That’s the best line yet. Most of these students did not know about what Judy wrote. Now they do. She never brought it to the classroom, she chose a pseudonym so that students couldn’t search and find anything and wow… just wow.
I really have a hard time understanding how anyone can see her writing Erotica as being a conflict for the classroom. As the parent of five kids, I can assure you that I would not hesitate to allow Mrs. Buranich to teach any one of them. She writes her books in her free time.
When the school system and parents have a say so in what a teacher does with her free time, that’s when I believe I move the hell out of our country. That’s absolutely insane. Teacher’s aren’t paid that great to begin with, she found something she was super good at and has been successful at. Leave her the hell alone.
What do you think of this? Are you opposed to her being in the schools and teaching, or do you believe she has the right to do what she wants in her free time?
If you are opposed, I’d actually love to hear the reasons why, so I can better understand where these narrow minded individuals are coming from. Maybe there is something I am missing?
